At Shrine Mont, camps close a little differently from other camps out there. We don't just pat the kids on the back and send them home, we hold an entire service dedicated to the session that just occurred as campers mix with families before we send them into the valley of the world. Today on the Camp Cast we talk about why we close camps the way we do and what camp staffs do as soon as the campers leave

Art Camp is a unique camp that offers campers from ages 8-15 to come together for one week and hone their artistic skills. Often one of the last camps of the summer, Art Camp gives campers a safe place to find their creative voice while providing a chance to participate in classic camp activities. This week we take a look at folks offering artistic guidance to our campers and learn just how Art Camp tackles having a camp so huge.
Next Wednesday is the final episode of this summer's Camp Cast. Remember to subscribe and rate the Shrine Mont Camp Cast on iTunes, it helps us grow our following and further spread the word about Shrine Mont Camps.
One of the longest running camps at Shrine Mont is open to campers of all ages. What started as "Family Conference" is now a full-blown Family Camp and it's perfect for just about everyone. It provides parents a chance to enjoy a relaxing camp vacation whether their kids are too young or too old to attend any of Shrine Mont's other camps. But that's not all Family Camp has to offer...

In the summer of 2016 I shadowed Olivia Bambara, the Explorer's Camp Program Director for a day. I had worked as a Program Director in the past, but half the fun of this podcast is that it was one of the few I've made where I don't have to hear my own voice. So I sought out Olivia who had been working on the Mountain for years and had now grown into the roll of Program Director at they very same camp where she grew up. For some campers that's the dream. Not all get that far, but for the few that do it's a very rewarding adventure. So I want to give a special thanks to Olivia who was kind enough to let me follow her for a day and skilled enough to handle being interviewed while hiking North Mountain. Enjoy!

This summer I was placed in a new role with Senior High Youth Conference, for the duration of their time on the mountain I would serve as Storyteller in Residence. Together we examined how totell the story of SHYC and spread the word about the folks we had marked both on and off the mountain. In this episode of the Camp Cast you'll not only hear from campers, but the many people we met with that week. A special thanks to Julia Burke who gave us permission to use her own reflections about SHYC in this episode.

Summer may be over, but it's still 80 degrees in Orkney Springs and a whole new batch of Camp Casts have just arrived! What better place to start than to discuss all the work that goes into putting camp together long before the summer starts. This week we'll be hearing from camp directors across the mountain about what it takes to build a well balanced staff that will last throughout the summer and what they look for when hiring their counselors.
Next Wednesday we'll be taking an in depth look at the Senior High Youth Conference and taking service off the mountain. This week at Art Camp, campers of all ages (8-15) came together to draw, paint, sculpt, and do art of multiple other mediums. Every camper went hiking to Seven Springs campsite, and the oldest group spent the night. The most exciting evening program that occurred was the craft carnival- or "craftival", in which campers tie-dyed shirts, made bandanas, and many other things. Every single camper was engaged at the "craftival", and it went off without a hitch. We are sad to say goodbye to Art Camp but know they will take what they've learned here into the valley of the world. St. George's Session III was the epitome of all things kooky. Whether it was the electives that the campers did every single day, or the clothing each person wore each day, everyone bought in to the idea that camp is a place to be authentically yourself. These pictures are just a small record of all the things that happened- including an elective in which the campers recorded a music video to "Send Me on my Way", and an elective in which campers actually built their own gigantic board games. We are forever reminded that each camper and counselor are all important members of the Body of Christ. Rain can't stop Explorers' Camp! Second session of Explorers' Camp hiked to North Mountain, Seven Springs, the Cross, and to Lake Laura (sometimes in the rain). The campers slept under the Happy Pavilion, followed by a night on top of North Mountain, and then spent a beautiful afternoon hanging out at Shenandoah National Park! The favorite activity of campers though, may have been "Mudfest", which is the last night mud party. Being in the wilderness allowed the campers and staff to fully connect with God and His creation this week at Explorers'. This week at St. Elizabeth's was filled with laughter, songs, and funny games and songs. Each camper was on a themed team named: Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman, or Green Lantern, and the staff intertwined the superhero theme into most activities including worship and electives. Overall, the week was a success and some of these pictures can attest to the happiness found at St. E's camp each year. |
